CAIRO, April 4 (UPI) -- Interpol has refused an arrest warrant for a former Egyptian prime minister who narrowly lost last year's presidential election, an Egyptian official says.
Gen. Ahmed Helmy, an aide to the Interior Ministry, said the warrant for Ahmed Shafiq was rejected because the police agency believed it was politically motivated, state news agency MENA reported Wednesday.
Shafiq was the last prime minister under deposed Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak. He was appointed on Jan. 31, 2011, and resigned one month later. He and his daughters are accused of seizing fish farm lands and giving them to a land development association he headed at the time.
After he lost his presidential bid in June 2012, Shafiq and his family moved to Abu Dhabi.
