COPENHAGEN, Denmark, April 3 (UPI) -- A report accuses Denmark's Defense Ministry of not providing accurate information about the safety of Afghan interpreters who aided Danish forces.
The report prepared by the military's chief of defense reveals the Defense Ministry knew five interpreters were killed and 12 others injured helping Danish soldiers in Afghanistan, The Copenhagen Post reported Wednesday.
Danish Defense Minister Nick Haekkerup has agreed to help eight Afghan interpreters but many more may need assistance, the report delivered to a parliamentary committee indicates.
Earlier Haekkerup said Denmark had no responsibility to take care of interpreters because they were hired by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
The new report questions whether Denmark does, in fact, have responsibility for the safety of more than the eight interpreters Haekkerup said were "particularly threatened."
One Afghan interpreter told the Post that Taliban infiltration of the Afghan army has exposed the identities of interpreters who worked with ISAF forces.
