Israeli says he may be jailed 8th time

TEL AVIV, Israel, April 1 (UPI) -- A19-year-old Israeli man says he may be facing another stint in jail when he -- for the eighth time -- refuses to serve in the army.

Nathan Blanc has been arrested and jailed seven times as a conscientious objector, refusing mandatory conscription, Britain's Guardian reported Sunday.

Blanc has been ordered to report to a military base near Tel Aviv Tuesday to enlist.

Young Israeli men are required to serve three years in the army; women two years.

Blanc said Israel has been in an almost constant state of war against Palestinians. He said it should have ended long ago.

"But both sides are giving into extremists and fundamentalists. The occupation was supposed to be temporary but now no one speaks of it ending," he said.

People are kept under Israeli control without their democratic rights and Palestinians are subjected to "collective punishment" because of the actions of a few, he said.

The Israeli army said in a statement it couldn't comment on Blanc's case. It said the country's security situation had created the need for conscription.
