KARACHI, Pakistan, March 30 (UPI) -- Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf says all the charges he faces after returning home this week after five years in exile are "trumped up."
Musharraf spoke after a court hearing in Karachi at which he was granted extensions of bail on corruption charges, CNN reported Saturday. He returned to Pakistan Sunday after living in London and Dubai following his resignation as president in 2008.
He has said he wants to face the charges and run for president in the May elections.
"I know there is no case against me," he said after the hearing. "I know that all the cases are trumped up, politicized cases."
Musharraf is charged with the illegal imprisonment of 62 senior judges during a period of emergency rule and with not providing adequate protection for former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in 2007 while campaigning against Musharraf.
He also is accused of ordering his troops to kill a popular tribal leader in Balochistan province in 2006.
The Pakistan Taliban have threatened to kill Musharraf after his return. Fears about his security were heightened when a shoe was thrown at him as he entered the Karachi courthouse Friday.
Musharraf said later he was unaware anything had been thrown at him.
