6.1-magnitude quake kills 1 in Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan, March 27 (UPI) -- A 6.1-magnitude earthquake rattled central Taiwan Wednesday, killing one woman and injuring 19 others, the National Fire Agency said.

Officials said the woman, 72, died when a temple wall fell on her, the Central News Agency reported.

Some of the 19 people hurt were students and teachers at elementary and junior high schools in Taichung who were hit by books falling from bookshelves, local officials said.

Officials at National Chung Hsing University in Taichung said classes were suspended for the remainder of the day because of safety concerns.
