Zambia's former president arrested

LUSAKA, Zambia, March 25 (UPI) -- Former Zambian president Rupiah Banda was arrested and ordered to turn in his passport on charges of government corruption the former leader denies.

Banda, who is now an international elections inspector, said the charge of stealing public money to fund his campaign was without merit and urged supporters to remain calm.

Banda was granted $100,000 bail, Zambia Reports said Monday.

"[Tuesday] I will be at court but of course they will not find any case to answer," Banda said to his jubilant supporters. "I am repeating my plea, please remain calm even under provocation, this will come to an end. I am thankful to my lawyers who are doing a good job."

Banda led Zambia from 2008 to 2011.
