YANBU, Saudi Arabia, March 18 (UPI) -- An Indonesian domestic worker was sentenced to death by a Saudi Arabian court for killing the 4-year-old daughter of her employers.
The worker, whose name was not reported, was also sentenced to eight months in prison and 400 lashes for trying to commit suicide after she killed the girl, Gulf News reported.
Saudi media reported that the worker has appealed the verdict and sentence to a higher court.
Prosecutors said the suspect, who worked for the family for seven years previous to the slaying, used a meat cleaver to kill the girl while her parents were at work and her siblings were at school. The slaying happened at the family's home in Yanbu.
No motive was given for the murder, but the defendant allegedly received a number of text messages from Indonesia on her mobile that told her to kill the child.
The Indonesian Consulate said it planned to press charges against the person who sent the messages to the defendant.
