Ex-chaplain guilty of child porn charges

PERTH, Australia, March 18 (UPI) -- A former Australian college chaplain was found guilty Monday of possessing child pornography.

Matthew David O'Meara, who was chaplain at Perth College, a private Anglican school, in 2010, was arrested after police came to the campus on suspicion child porn had been downloaded. When they interviewed O'Meara they found a computer thumb drive in his pocket that contained pornographic video and images of underage girls, officials said. A second thumb drive was found in a colleague's classroom containing similar content.

O'Meara's defense attorney said the chaplain had found the thumb drive earlier in the day and had intended to bring it to the school's lost and found but he was stopped by police before he could do so.

An initial trial resulted in a hung jury but jurors returned a guilty verdict after deliberating more than 3 hours following a second trial, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

O'Meara was released on bail pending sentencing Thursday, his lawyer said.
