Weapons stolen from presidential palace

MOGADISHU, Somalia, March 17 (UPI) -- Thieves were systematically stealing weapons from army storage areas inside the Somali presidential palace, sources told the Shabelle Media Network.

Shabelle said security guards discovered that a large number of weapons were missing from the palace's storage areas Saturday night.

The smuggling appears to have been going on for some time.

A captain has been detained following the discovery, Shabelle said.

Shabelle said President Hassan Sheik Mohamud visited the area where the weapons were stored.

Officials are not releasing any information, but said they are completing an investigation.
