COPENHAGEN, Denmark, March 13 (UPI) -- The Danish capital of Copenhagen is on the verge of legalizing marijuana, at least temporarily, documents released by the city council indicate.

The documents, released ahead of Friday's legalization conference, reveal the council is proposing a 3-year trial to decrease gang crime and provide a better life for marijuana users, The Copenhagen Post reported.

One element of the plan calls for the possible importation of marijuana from Colorado and Washington, the two U.S. states where recreational use is now legal.

"We realize of course that there are a lot of international conventions and regulations to deal with, but we think it is possible," Deputy Mayor Mikkel Warming told The Local.se.

At this point, there has been no outreach to officials in either state, Warming said.

However, the city attorney of Seattle will be one of the main speakers at Friday's conference on legalization.

"It would be strange not to use the occasion to address practicalities," Warming said.
