LAS PALMAS, Canary Islands, March 4 (UPI) -- Powerful winds and heavy rains hit the Canary Islands Monday, causing flight cancellations and school closures. Officials reported waves up to 16 feet high.
Winds were clocked at up to 80 mph, thinkSPAIN reported.

At least 50 flights were canceled.
Schools were closed except those on the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, officials said.
