University employee killed in Mosul

BAGHDAD, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Violent acts were reported across Iraq Thursday, with officials saying a university employee was killed in Mosul and 22 people injured in bombings elsewhere.

A security official said unidentified gunmen targeted an employee of Nineveh University, opening fire on him in front of his residence in northern Mosul, IraqiNews.com reported Thursday.

The security official said the gunmen fled.

Also in Mosul, a security detail discovered a corpse of a police officer Thursday, two days after he was reported kidnapped.

An official said the policeman had been shot in the head and chest after he was kidnapped in al-Shalalat area of northern Mosul, IraqiNews.com said.

In Wasit province in western Iraq, 14 civilians were injured in car bombing in al-Azizya district, officials said.

The explosion took place near a cattle market, security officials said, and damaged several nearby vehicles.

Eight civilians in southwestern Baghdad were injured when two roadside bombs exploded, IraqiNews.com said.

Security officials said the bombs were along the road in Shurta al-Rabia area and exploded in succession, damaging several nearby buildings and businesses.
