VENICE, Italy, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- A painting of the Pieta in storage at a Venice museum is now believed to be the work of the Renaissance artist Vittore Carpaccio, officials say.
The Correr Museum announced the attribution Friday in its newsletter, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. The painting, depicting Mary holding the body of her son, Jesus Christ, was in a museum storeroom.

The find is the second at the museum in two years. In 2011, restoration of a Madonna and Child turned up the signature "Vethor Scharpaco" or Carpaccio.
Carpaccio did most of his work from 1490 to 1519. His best-known works are a series of nine wall paintings, "The Legend of Saint Ursula," originally done for a Venetian church dedicated to the saint.
