Gunmen fire at Egyptian party member

DAMIETTA, Egypt, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Gunmen in Egypt's port city of Damietta fired shots at a leading member of the Islamist Wasat Party early Friday but he escaped without injury, officials said.

Saad Abdel Ghani, assistant secretary-general of the party in Damietta, was driving in the Huways district about 2 a.m. when several gunmen began firing at him, Ahram Online reported.

"Several gunmen appeared suddenly and fired shots at Abdel Ghani," Essam Sultan, the deputy leader of the party, wrote on his Facebook page. "He managed to speed away in his car but the back and side windows were damaged. He had a lucky escape."

Sultan accused the head of security in Damietta of conspiring with gunmen to attack Abdel Ghani.
