Colombia's FARC calls for free land

BOGOTA, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Colombia's largest rebel group Sunday called on the government to hand out a huge amount of farmland to the poor as a condition of a future peace pact.

The chief negotiator for the FARC rebels said on one of its websites the distribution of 9 million hectares of land to poor farmers would help repay the government's "historic debt" to its citizens.

The negotiator, identified as Ivan Marquez, said the land would come from the unused holdings of wealthy landowners and property seized from drug traffickers, Colombia Reports said Sunday.
