Doctors did 100 sterilizations in a day

MALDA, India, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A government hospital in India's West Bengal state is under investigation after two doctors allegedly sterilized more than 100 women in one day, officials say.

Some of the 103 operations were done in an open field, NDTV reported Thursday.

Many of the women were left to recover in the hospital's open compound while still under anesthesia.

Residents of the area around the hospital said such large-scale sterilizations were routine, but that tents to house the patients were usually erected.

The hospital where the surgeries were performed has 30 beds each for men and women.

Government regulations say no more than 25 sterilization procedures can be done each day, the report said.
