The renewed ban was proposed by opposition party ChristenUnie.

The Netherlands banned smoking in cafes, bars and clubs in 2008 but later made smaller establishments exempt from the rule and, overall, it has been widely violated, Dutchnews.nl reported.

ChristenUnie has proposed reinstating the blanket ban.

"Turning a blind eye to smoking in small cafes has had an enormous snowball effect," ChristenUnie Parliament member Carla Dik-Faber told the Telegraaf newspaper.
