Al-Qaida car bomb kills 8 in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Al Qaida is being blamed for a suicide car bomb in central Yemen that killed at least eight government soldiers, military officials said.

The attack took place at a military installation in Birdaa province, Marib Press said Monday. The attack was meant to break a blockade the military has set up to stop terrorist movement through the region after negotiations between the al-Qaida elements and tribal elders broke down last week.

No one has officially claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The Yemeni military has been active in the area trying to root out terrorist elements and the bombing is thought to be retaliation, Press TV said. The group has expanded its influence in Yemen amid two years of widespread protests of the weak central government.
