7 dead in Turkish retaining wall collapse

ISTANBUL, Turkey, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Rescuers searched for possible survivors following the collapse of a soccer field retaining wall in Turkey that killed seven people, officials said.

The collapse occurred Sunday during a match in the Ugur Sports Facility in Sirnak province's Ataturk neighborhood, Today's Zaman reported.


"The landslide occurred due to heavy rain. Three have been [people] rescued alive from under the debris, while seven, including a child, died," Sirnak Gov. Vahdettin Ozkan said.

Those injured were taken to Sirnak State Hospital for treatment, Today's Zaman reported.

Nearby houses were evacuated due to another possible landslide, Anadolu Agency reported.
