Old cruise ship adrift off Newfoundland

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The Lyubov Orlova, a retired cruise ship on its way to being scrapped, is adrift in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Canada, officials said.

A tow rope broke Thursday, one day after the ship began its travel from St. John's, Newfoundland, where it had been docked for two years, to the Dominican Republic, where it will be dismantled, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

A spokesman for the government agency Fisheries and Oceans Canada said the crew of the tugboat pulling the ship will attempt to reconnect the line Friday.

The ship is currently adrift off the southeast tip of Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula, in winds as high as 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) per hour and waves as high as three meters (9.8 feet) high, the CBC said.
