England preps for heavy snow, flooding

LONDON, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Some 32 flood warnings have been issued across Britain in anticipation of heavy weekend rains that will be preceded by heavy snow, authorities say.

As much as 6.5 inches of snow are expected in Scotland, northern England, the Midlands and the east, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

The snow was expected to begin as heavy rain west of England and turn to snow as it moved east toward the island kingdom.

Police have posted 12 amber warnings from the Midlands through central England warning the public to be alert for possible disruptions caused by the heavy snow.

The flood warnings were prompted by forecasts of warming weather that project more than 1.5 inches of rain, mostly in the southern regions, by Sunday.

The cold snap has led to a number of deaths. A 42-year-old man died Thursday when his car slipped into a river as he was driving his daughter to school.
