Alleged kiss means jail time, deportation

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A court in the United Arab Emirate of Dubai sentenced a couple to jail and be deported for kissing in public, rejecting the man's claim he was performing CPR.

Besides the one-year jail sentence on the charge of committing a lewd act in public, the Dubai Misdemeanor Court on Tuesday fined the couple about $272 each for consuming alcohol and ordered their deportation once their sentence is completed, the Gulf News reported Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Indian man claims he was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation last month on his 25-year-old Filipino girlfriend who was having an asthma attack in a lifeguard tower. A female passerby said she saw the couple behaving intimately.

The defendants pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing.

"We did not kiss. My colleague suffered an asthma [attack] while we were seated there and I performed CPR on her," the man said.

The couple admitted to having alcohol.

The Gulf News said the woman who called police said she was "shocked" to see the couple in a position "that looked like they were making love. They were indulged in a very intimate situation ... but they were not naked."

The defendants must appeal within two weeks.
