One dead in Turkish coal mine explosion

GELIK, Turkey, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Police say they have launched in investigation into a coal mine explosion in Gelik, Turkey, that killed one miner and injured five others.

The blast Friday in the privately owned mine in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak killed Sedat Haramat, a 29-year-old father of two.

Naim Kuyumcu and Omer Caymaz, sustained burns and were hospitalized in critical condition. Murat Karaman, Mustafa Gideroglu and Mustafa Bektas, were poisoned by gas and hospitalized, the Istanbul newspaper Today's Zaman reported.
