Law to aid Egypt in asset recovery

CAIRO, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- A law has been proposed in Egypt to expedite recovery of assets sent out of the country during the Mubarak regime, a source at Egypt's justice ministry said.

The ministry source told the English-language Egyptian news site Ahram Online the new law will allow investigations to be carried out in a "more efficient and professional way," adding "The Illicit Gains Department has been trying to issue the law since August 2011."

The final draft of the law has been submitted to Prime Minister Hisham Qandil's Cabinet.

The Illegal Gains Department is investigating a number of criminal cases against former members of the regime, including former President Hosni Mubarak, but hasn't recovered any assets from abroad, Aram Online said.
