Avalanches hit Swedish resort; no injuries

ARE, Sweden, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- A ski resort in Are, Sweden, was hit by four avalanches, all set off by skiers, officials said. There were no reports of injuries.

Police formed a rescue party Monday after receiving reports of the avalanches, which occurred a day earlier, the news agency TT reported.

A helicopter, mountain rescue personnel and search dogs were sent to the resort but the search was called after a few hours.

"None of the witnesses could guarantee that anybody was caught in the avalanche," said Marten Johansson, head of the Are Avalanche Center. "Those who triggered the avalanche were lucky they ended up above it and were safe."

Level 3 avalanche alerts were issued for Are, Bydalen and Ramundberget, meaning spontaneous avalanches and those caused by people were likely to occur, TheLocal.se reported.

The maximum avalanche alert is level 5.
