Work to begin on Rome Holocaust Museum

ROME, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Work will begin early in 2013 on Rome's national Holocaust Museum, Rome Mayor Gianni Alamanno said.

The final city council vote is expected in mid-January and construction bid requests will be offered two weeks later, with contracts to be awarded in early spring, he said.

Work on the 22-million Euro ($29 million) project at Villa Torlonia, the former home of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, has been delayed several times, the Italian news agency ANSA said Friday.

The city council also approved dedication of a plaque at Rome's Tiburtina rail station to honor Italian Jews sent to their deaths in Nazi concentration camps, ANSA said.
