Taxi driver shot after car hits officer

JERUSALEM, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- An Israeli border police officer was slightly injured after an Arab taxi driver allegedly tried to run him over in East Jerusalem, police said.

In response, a police officer fired shots at the car, wounding the taxi driver in the leg. The man was arrested and taken to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem for treatment.

The incident was described by police as nationalistic, Maariv said. The suspect allegedly told police he sought to run over as many police officers as possible and had planned to ram the car into the police station, the paper said.

The Sunday morning incident started when the taxi rammed a delivery truck leaving the police station. The driver of the taxi then allegedly tried to run over the border police officer who as he approached the the man for questioning, the Hebrew daily reported.
