Texel Mayor Francine Giskes van Texel said Saturday that the animal could not be saved and that it may be euthanized Sunday.

On Sunday, marine life expert Lenie 't Hart said that the whale, nicknamed Johannes, had died, but there was no other confirmation. 'T Hart was also critical of two earlier missions to free the whale, saying her organization was not involved in the rescue effort.
