Ex-Bruin faces charges in hunting death

BRANTFORD, Ontario, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Former Boston Bruins player Stan Jonathan faces charges in the Nov. 11 shooting death, while deer hunting, of another hunter in Ontario, officials said.

Jonathan, 57, who had an appearance Friday in Brantford on a charge of criminal negligence causing death, allegedly fired his high-powered rifle in a wooded area and the bullet struck and killed Peter Kosid, 28, of Hamilton, The Boston Globe reported.

A report by the Six Nations Police said Kosid was "in the bush, dressed in camouflage, bow hunting" and the "two hunters were not known to each other and were not hunting together."

"It's not like we think he did it on purpose,'' the victim's brother, Brad Kosid, told the Hamilton Spectator, "but it was so careless. It was a split-second decision that cost a life.''

Jonathan, who played for the Bruins in the 1970s, faces a minimum four years in prison if he is convicted.
