Dr. Afridi tortured in jail, family says

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- The doctor who helped the CIA hunt down Osama Bin Laden, jailed in Peshawar, Pakistan, has been tortured in prison, his family says.

Jamil Afridi, brother of imprisoned Dr. Shakeel Afridi, said in an interview with Fox News, "I was told by a prison source that Shakeel and two guards were subjected to torture by jail administration sometime in November. His privileges have been revoked and he's been shifted to another jail cell. They are strict with him, and treating him inhumanely."

Afridi was sentenced to 33 years imprisonment on charges he had links to a banned military group. He aided the CIA by collecting DNA samples from the bin Laden compound under the cover of a Hepatitis B campaign. His role has led to strained relations between the United States and Pakistan, Fox News said, adding there are conflicting reports whether Afridi is on a hunger strike, and whether the Peshawar Central Jail or Pakistan's ISI intelligence agency has supervision of him.
