Facebook pedophile page removed

BELFAST, Northern Ireland, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A convicted sex offender won a court order in Northern Ireland to have a pedophile-monitoring Facebook page removed.

A judge ruled some content on the Web page, including a photograph of the litigant, amounted to prima facie harassment and a possible infringement of his human rights.

The man -- whose name was not reported -- was given a six-year sentence for a string of child sex offenses committed two decades ago. In the lawsuit, he claimed harassment, misuse of private information and a breach of his right to privacy and a fear the threatening comments directed at him on the Web page would lead to violence against him, the BBC reported Thursday.

"Society has dealt with the plaintiff in accordance with the rule of law. He has been punished by incarceration, and he is subject to substantial daily restrictions on his lifestyle," Justice Mr. McCloskey said in his ruling.

The court ordered Facebook to remove its Northern Ireland "Keeping our kids safe from predators" page, but soon after the page was taken down, a second similar page was posted.

It was not clear whether it was uploaded by the person who posted the initial page, the International Business Times reported.
