Police arrest Italian pols for mafia link

COSENZA, Italy, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Italian police arrested two politicians Thursday in Cosenza on suspicion of involvement with a presumed local mafia boss, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Police put Umberto Bernaudo, mayor of Rende, and Pietro Paolo Ruffolo, town councillor in the same municipality, under house arrest.

The investigation linked the two to a presumed local 'Ndranheta mafia boss, ANSA reported. Bernaudo and Ruffolo allegedly interfered in a municipal service company to the benefit of Michele Di Puppo -- an alleged key player in the Lanzino-Presta-Di Puppo gang -- in exchange for electoral support.

Meanwhile, police Wednesday discovered what appeared to be an underground hideout used by the Camorra crime syndicate in Caserta, ANSA reported Wednesday.

They found the abandoned shelter -- which could only be reached by a hidden elevator -- under an uninhabited house near Naples.
