Cairo man convicted of sexual harassment

CAIRO, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A 42-year-old Cairo man was sentenced to a two-year prison term and a fine for sexual harassment, a rare conviction in Egypt, a local rights group said.

El-Nadeem said the man was arrested in July for sexually harassing a woman in the southern Cairo district of Maadi.

Since Egypt's government upheaval in January, the number of initiatives to combat sexual harassment has increased significantly, Ahram Online reported Monday, noting sexual harassment lawsuits receive particular media attention because of the unclear legal punishments for the crime.

Prime Minister Hisham Qandil said in October an encompassing sexual harassment law, with harsh penalties, was in preparation.

A survey in 2008 by the Egyptian Center for Woman's Rights said 83 percent of Egyptian women, and 98 percent of foreign women in Egypt, have said they suffered sexual harassment at least once.
