Israeli defense officials said they believe the shells were not intentionally fired at Israel but instead were stray shells fired in clashes between forces loyal to President Bashar Assad and rebel forces, Israel Radio said. Sappers were dispatched to the area.

The incident occurred just days after Israel submitted a complaint to the United Nations charging Syria with violating the Israeli-Syrian cease-fire agreement after three Syrian tanks entered the demilitarized zone near the Israeli border where they remained until nightfall. An Israeli army jeep patrolling near the border came under fire Sunday. No one was injured in the attack.
