More Canadian crews sent to Sandy recovery

TORONTO, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A Canadian electric utility dispatched 80 more workers Tuesday to New York to help restore power to the hurricane-battered region.

"Superstorm" Sandy devastated the Northeast coast eight days ago and by Tuesday, power was still knocked out for at least 780,000 people in New Jersey and 540,000 in New York.

The Hydro One utility, owned by the province of Ontario, initially sent 145 line maintainers, foresters and support staff to New York and announced Tuesday another 80 workers were headed to New York.

They were scheduled to have a safety and logistics orientation before joining Con Ed utility workers, Hydro One Vice President Len McMillan said.

"Some areas have been without electricity for over a week and with the weather getting colder, the situation is getting more critical every day," he said.

Most recently, 200 Hydro One workers traveled to Washington, Maryland and Virginia July 1 after a massive storm hit the region.
