JERUSALEM, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Israel says it lodged a complaint with U.N. officials after three Syrian tanks entered the demilitarized border zone during clashes with rebel forces.
On Saturday afternoon, the army raised the level of alert along the border with Syria after spotting three tanks apparently involved in clashes with Syrian rebels in the Be'er Ajam village, located on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, a few miles from the Israeli border, Israel Radio said.
Israel's defense establishment concluded the tanks' presence was not an intended act of aggression against Israel but linked to the civil war in Syria, The Jerusalem Post said.
Israel waited for the United Nations Disengagement Force on the Golan Heights to oversee the withdrawal of the tanks from the area, The Post said.
Shell fragments from the battle between Syrian regime and rebel forces in the village fell inside Israel, causing a brush fire, Israel's Channel One television said.
Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 Six Days War. Following the Yom Kippur War in 1973, Israel and Syria signed a ceasefire agreement that left most of the Golan Heights in Israel's hands.
