Chechen woman arrested as child trafficker

GROZNY, Russia, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A woman arrested by Chechen police for attempting to sell a child is a serial child trafficker, Russian officials say.

The 60-year-old hospital worker was arrested Wednesday in Grozny when she attempted to sell a 5-day-old infant to a police officer for $18,500, RIA Novosti reported.

The child had been taken from a hospital in Dagestan and investigators are searching for the parents, who may be involved in the crime.

The Interior Ministry said the woman sold a 1-year-old girl last month for $13,000 in Dagestan.

The woman was operating a business with another woman that sought potential buyers of children, Russia's Investigative Committee said.

The women charged about $11,000 for a girl, $16,000 for a boy and $5,000 for official documents, police said.

Russia's criminal code prescribes a 15-year prison term for child trafficking.
