Israeli mayor still on hunger strike

JERUSALEM, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Residents of Sderot, an Israeli town less than a mile from Gaza, said Saturday they plan to join their mayor in a protest outside the prime minister's office.

Sderot's mayor, David Buskila, spent a fourth day on a hunger strike, Ynetnews reported. He is seeking increased financial assistance for Sderot, a frequent target of rockets fired from Gaza.

Buskila says Sderot has received about $1.8 million of the $18 million the Knesset or Israeli parliament has appropriated for it.

"This is the fourth day of my hunger strike and the seventh day of the workers' strike in Sderot -- every additional day is unnecessary," he said.

"I hope that on Sunday, the government will find a solution to this problem. I hope the ministers won't allow the situation in Sderot to worsen."

Residents said that if necessary they will set up tents in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to put pressure on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and other officials.
