Jordan arrests Syrian suspects

AMMAN, Jordan, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Jordanian security officials said they arrested seven Syrians with advanced communications equipment.

The arrests were conducted after Jordan's Public Security Department received a tip concerning one suspect whose movements were monitored, Ammonnews.net reported Wednesday.

After that suspect was arrested in an Amman neighborhood and his communications equipment was seized, he allegedly confessed he was part of a seven-member group living in Amman and Irbid, the news agency said.

Late Sunday night and Monday, Jordanian security officials arrested the other suspects and seized what was described as illegal communications equipment in their possession.

The security department said the investigation was ongoing.

The arrests occurred just a day after Jordanian security authorities announced the arrests of 11 Jordanian nationals, all affiliated with al-Qaida, who allegedly were plotting to target the U.S. and British embassies in Amman, shopping malls and other sites in the capital for attacks.
