Canada remembers bullying victims

SURREY, British Columbia, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A 15-year-old girl who took her own life after bullying incidents is being honored and remembered in ceremonies across Canada, officials said.

The remembrance, expressed in candlelight vigils, protests and moments of silence Friday and coinciding with worldwide observances, takes place in communities throughout Canada, including Surrey, British Columbia, home of Amanda Todd, who committed suicide Oct. 10 after posting a YouTube video describing her depression after years of bullying, blackmail and physical assaults at school, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

The Toronto District School Board, Canada's largest with 250,000 students and 40,000 employees, said it would pause for a minute of silence.

The memorial events come a day after London, Ontario, police reported the arrest of eight high school girls for criminal harassment in a bullying case, saying one student was the target of physical, emotional and online bullying.
