Ex-city councilor in police stand-off

WHITBY, Ontario, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A former councilor of a city east of Toronto was in an armed standoff with police Tuesday after a late night abduction of a city lawyer, police said.

The Durham Regional Police SWAT team, fire trucks and paramedics were staged in an industrial area of Whitby, 38 miles east of Toronto, all day as a man was barricaded inside a business, the Toronto Star reported.

Police said the man was Robert Lutczyk, a former city councilor in Oshawa, adjacent to Whitby, who claims some of his "intellectual property" was being used illegally, the Toronto Sun reported.

Investigators said that allegation was apparently behind the abduction of a Whitby city lawyer Monday night after he pulled into his driveway around 10:30 p.m. after a city meeting, the newspapers said.

The lawyer managed to escape uninjured around 2 a.m.

During the standoff, former Oshawa Mayor John Gray told the Sun police outside the industrial building were "trying to convince [Lutczyk] not to blow his head off."
