PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Officials at a southern Nigeria university have closed the school after protesters burned homes during a march demanding justice in the deaths of four students.
Four University of Port Harcourt students alleged to have committed theft and rape were lynched and their bodies burned Friday by a mob, the Nigerian Tribune reported Wednesday.
The incident was caught on video in which a large crowd could be seen cheering.
The rally, organized by the National Association of Nigerian Students, drew protesters from several neighboring states.
The university's vice chancellor was booed and packets of water thrown at him when he agreed to speak to the students. Demonstrators then marched to the community where the students were killed and set a few houses on fire.
Police have charged 11 people in the deaths of the students.
The deaths follow the recent killing of more than 40 students of Federal Polytechnic in eastern Nigeria.
Police have arrested at least 30 people in those deaths. Twelve of the suspects are said to be members of terror group Boko Haram.
