Toews won't decide Khadr's treatment

OTTAWA, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews says prison authorities will make all decisions on the future of longtime Guantanamo detainee Omar Khadr.

A spokeswoman, Julie Carmichael, said Toews will not intervene to prevent Khadr from getting day passes or parole, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Khadr, a Canadian citizen who turned 26 last month, was only 15 when he was captured in Afghanistan in 2002. He pleaded guilty to war crimes in 2010.

When he was returned to Canada last week, Khadr was immediately transferred to a maximum-security prison in Ontario. Toews called him a "known supporter of the al-Qaida terrorist network and a convicted terrorist."

"He is satisfied the Correctional Service of Canada can administer Omar Khadr's sentence in a manner which recognizes the serious nature of the crimes that he has committed and ensure the safety of Canadians is protected during incarceration," Carmichael said Friday. "Any decisions related to his future will be determined by the independent Parole Board of Canada in accordance with Canadian law."
