Man dies, 2 hurt in Gaza tunnel collapse

GAZA CITY, Gaza, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- One man was killed and two others injured Wednesday when a tunnel used to smuggle goods under the Gaza-Sinai border collapsed, medical officials said.

A spokesman for the Gaza health ministry said Suleiman Ramadan al-Masri, 20, died when the Rafah tunnel collapsed, Palestinian news agency Maan reported.

The two injured men were hospitalized.

Medical personnel say more than 160 Palestinians have died in the maze of tunnels since an Israeli imposed siege on the Gaza Strip in 2006 resulted in creation of the tunnels.

Saturday, a 33-year-old man was killed when a Rafah tunnel collapsed and a 24-year-old man died in a similar incident in early September.

The tunnels are used to transport everything from food to fuel and cars. Tunnelers said 80 percent of food supplies in Gaza are moved through the tunnels.

Militants are believed to have used the tunnels to kill 16 Egyptian soldiers at a checkpoint on Aug. 5. Since then, Egypt has begun closing the tunnels.
