Gadhafi captor dies after torture

MISRATA, Libya, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- The man credited with capturing former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was buried after he died from torture and kidnapping injuries, family said.

Omran Ben Shaaban was among the group that pulled Gadhafi from his hiding place in a drain pipe near Sirte, Libya, in 2011. Gadhafi was dragged from the drain pipe, violently carried away and killed.

Shaaban, 22, and three friends were attacked and kidnapped by Gadhafi loyalists at Bani Walid in southwest Libya in July. After government negotiations he was released and sent for treatment last week at the American Hospital in France, where he died of his injuries Tuesday, ABC News said.

He had torture marks on his body and a paralyzing bullet near his spinal cord, the Tripoli Post reported Wednesday.

"It was clear he was beaten a lot. His entire chest was sliced with razors," said his brother, Abdullah Shaaban.

Shaaban's body was flown back to Libya and buried after an emotional memorial service in a Misrata, Libya, sports stadium, the newspaper said.
