Syrian shells fall near Israeli border

JERUSALEM, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Several mortar shells landed in the northern Golan Heights near the Israel-Syria border Tuesday but officials say they weren't intended for Israel targets.

The apparent accidental shelling was caused by the ongoing conflict between Syrian government forces and rebels, Ynetnews.com reported.

No one was injured in the incident near the Syrian village of Jubta Al-Hashab, said the Israeli military. The projectiles landed in an open area near the border fence about 7 a.m. Tuesday

The Israeli military filed a grievance with U.N. forces stationed in the Golan Heights.

Israeli officials said they are concerned the fighting will reach the Golan Heights and last week had a flash drill there to prepare for any conflict.

A mortar shell the Israeli military said was fired by Syria at rebel forces landed east of the Druze village of Mas'ada in the demilitarized zone between Israel in Syria about two months ago, Haaretz reported.

That incident was believed caused by miscalculation by Syrian forces in a village near the border, the Israeli military said.
