Perez is the former editor of Anncol, a website that favors FARC, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

He was arrested at an airport in Venezuela in 2011 after Interpol issued a Red Notice alert against him for his ties to FARC.

At his trial, prosecutors presented hundreds of email message taken from a FARC commander's computer demonstrating that Perez coordinated his articles with the rebel group.

In one email Perez apologized to FARC for publishing information the guerrilla commanders didn't like.
