China condemns Benghazi attack

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- China condemned the deadly attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, saying the current Libyan regime must protect the lives of all foreign diplomats.

"We are shocked at attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that caused the death and injury of a number of people, including the U.S. ambassador," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said. "And we strongly condemn the violent deeds."

The official Xinhua news agency reported China believes the Libyan regime bears the responsibility and obligation to take all measures to protect the life and property of foreign institutions and their staffs under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
