11 dead in Kenyan tribal dispute

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Eleven people were killed in Kenya Friday during what officials term a long-running dispute over grazing land and water.

The dispute between two tribes stretches back years in the nation's Tana Delta region and defense officials are investigating whether a government official fanned the flames, Voice of America reported.

Friday's attack by the Orma clan was believed to be retaliation for an August raid by the rival Pokomo tribe that left more than 50 people dead. The Kenyan defense minister ordered an investigation into the matter and has tried to broker a peace deal, but Voice of America said the government is suspicious a deputy minister with ties to one of the tribes has encouraged the violence.
