A 'close watch' kept on N. Korean reactor

SEOUL, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- North Korea's progress in creating a light-water atomic reactor is being closely watched in Seoul and Beijing, a high-ranking South Korean official said Friday.

Construction of the experimental reactor might camouflage the stockpiling of enriched uranium suitable for making bombs, but the Foreign Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there were no "serious" signs so far, Yonhap News Agency reported.

North Korea says the project is for producing electricity.

China and South Korea shared concerns about the reactor during talks in Beijing this week, the news agency said.

The South Korean official said the two sides were "keeping a close watch" on the facility.

"But both sides don't see any serious situations with regard to the reactor," he said.

South Korean and Chinese officials don't see any "immediate sign" that North Korea will conduct another nuclear test, the official said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, citing satellite photographs, said last month North Korea had made "significant" progress on the reactor.
